Focus on something else than the narcissist. How can focus make you happy?
Focusing can contribute to your overall happiness and well-being in several ways:
- Increased productivity: When you are focused, you are better able to concentrate on the task at hand and avoid distractions. This heightened productivity can give you a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, leading to increased happiness.
- Sense of purpose: Focusing on meaningful goals or activities gives you a sense of purpose and direction in life. When you have a clear focus on what you want to achieve, it can bring a sense of fulfillment and happiness as you make progress towards your goals.
- Flow state: When you are fully immersed and focused on an activity, you may experience a state of flow. Flow is characterized by intense concentration, a feeling of being in the zone, and a loss of self-consciousness. This state can bring immense joy and satisfaction as you engage in an activity that challenges and excites you.
- Reduced stress and worry: Focusing on the present moment can help alleviate stress and anxiety. By concentrating on what you can control and letting go of distractions or concerns about the past or future, you can experience a greater sense of peace and contentment.
- Improved relationships: When you practice active listening and focus on the people you interact with, it enhances your relationships. Being fully present in conversations and giving your undivided attention to others can deepen connections and foster a sense of happiness and belonging.
- Mindfulness and self-awareness: Focusing on the present moment is a key aspect of mindfulness. By developing mindfulness skills, you can cultivate a greater sense of self-awareness, emotional regulation, and an appreciation for the simple joys in life. This can contribute to long-term happiness and well-being.
Remember that focus is a skill that can be developed with practice. It may require conscious effort and the adoption of strategies such as time management, setting clear goals, minimizing distractions, and practicing mindfulness techniques. By incorporating focus into your daily life, you can experience the benefits it brings to your overall happiness and fulfillment.
Extra tip: make self-care a main focus in your everyday life. I have at least 7 items of self-care on my daily to-do list. If I’m not feeling excellent, I’m no longer blaming the narcissist (even if they are to blame, they don’t deserve the focus and focusing on them certainly never helped me). Instead, I remember my self-care to-dos and I instantly know where I’ve neglected myself and what I can do to make myself feel better. This is self-empowering and shifts the focus away from toxic people and back onto myself, in a positive way. Self-care first, always!
